Lighting layers: why every room needs three kinds of light
Ambient, task and accent — the simple framework designers use to make rooms feel warm at night and work well by day.
A room lit by a single ceiling light always feels flat. Designers layer three kinds of light so each room works for every moment of the day.
Ambient light
The general glow that fills a room — cove lights in a false ceiling, or a soft central fixture. Keep it dimmable so evenings can feel relaxed.
Task light
Focused light where you work: under-cabinet strips in the kitchen, reading lamps by the bed, a desk lamp in the study.
Accent light
The magic layer — lit niches, picture lights, back-lit panels. It draws the eye to what you love and gives the room depth.
Plan it before the ceiling goes up
Wiring for lighting scenes has to be planned before the false ceiling and panelling are built, which is why lighting is part of our design stage, not an afterthought.
