Interiors, decoded
The terms your quotation will use
Know these and you can read any BOQ — and ask the right questions.
- MR, BWR & BWP plywood
- Moisture-resistant (MR) suits dry rooms; boiling-water-resistant (BWR) suits kitchens; boiling-water-proof or marine (BWP, IS 710) goes under sinks and in bathrooms.
- HDHMR & MDF
- Engineered boards. HDHMR is dense and moisture-resistant, good for shutters; MDF machines beautifully for painted and CNC work but belongs in dry areas.
- Carcass & shutter
- The carcass is the box of a cabinet; the shutter is its door. The carcass decides how long a unit lasts, the shutter decides how it looks.
- Edge banding
- A PVC or ABS strip that seals a board's cut edges. Every exposed edge should have it — it keeps moisture out and stops chipping.
- Soft-close & full-extension
- Soft-close hinges and channels close gently instead of slamming. Full-extension channels let a drawer open all the way, so nothing hides at the back.
- Gypsum vs POP ceilings
- Gypsum boards (IS 2095) are factory-made and fixed on a metal frame — fast and clean. POP is cast on site — flexible for curves but slower and messier.
- FRLS wiring
- Flame-retardant, low-smoke wiring (IS 694). If a fault ever happens, it resists spreading fire and gives off far less smoke.
- Running foot & sq ft pricing
- Kitchens are priced per running foot along the counter; wardrobes and panels per square foot of front area (width × height).
- BOQ
- Bill of Quantities: the itemised list of every item with size, material, brand and price. A good quotation is a BOQ — not a single lump sum.
